True Bypass or Buffered?

Two approaches, one goal: preserving your tone

TRUE BYPASS

A true bypass pedal lets your signal pass directly when the effect is off, without going through the circuit.

🔸 Pros:

  • Pure, unaltered signal
  • No components in the signal path
  • Preserves your instrument’s character

⚠️ Keep in mind:

  • Can lead to high-end loss (tone sucking)

  • More sensitive with long cables or large pedalboards

BUFFERED

A buffered pedal uses a buffer circuit to strengthen and stabilize your signal.

🔸 Pros:

  • Preserves high frequencies over long distances of cables
  • Ideal for complex pedalboards
  • Maintains clarity and definition

⚠️ Keep in mind:

  • May slightly color the tone depending on the circuit

In practice

  • Small setup (1–3 pedals) → True bypass is enough
  • Larger setups or long cables → Buffered recommended
