True Bypass or Buffered?
Two approaches, one goal: preserving your tone
TRUE BYPASS
A true bypass pedal lets your signal pass directly when the effect is off, without going through the circuit.
🔸 Pros:
- Pure, unaltered signal
- No components in the signal path
- Preserves your instrument’s character
⚠️ Keep in mind:
-
Can lead to high-end loss (tone sucking)
- More sensitive with long cables or large pedalboards
BUFFERED
A buffered pedal uses a buffer circuit to strengthen and stabilize your signal.
🔸 Pros:
- Preserves high frequencies over long distances of cables
- Ideal for complex pedalboards
- Maintains clarity and definition
⚠️ Keep in mind:
- May slightly color the tone depending on the circuit
In practice
- Small setup (1–3 pedals) → True bypass is enough
- Larger setups or long cables → Buffered recommended
